A different kind of YA fantasy that combines Norse Mythology and Heavy Metal perfectly
Since a young age and an unfortunate accident Ben can see the Otherlife; a world where the Norse Gods rule and Ben feels truly accepted. Along with his love of metal music he can escape from his parents divorce and the pressures of achieving a scholarship. Ben is extremely studious and shy though things soon change as he prepares for his exams….
Enter Hobie; the charming school bully who soon befriends Ben, at first, to copy from his work at school. Hobie sees Ben’s obsession with the Otherlife and hopes that one day he will get to see visions of this world too. Their relationship, akin to brothers, beautifully develops and Hobie kinda becomes a more likeable character. However all good things must come to an end and everything culminates in the week long events of october half term and their trip to Duvalle Hall.
This book is so different from any other YA fantasy books I have read. Each chapter is either written from Ben present day or Hobie back in 2008 and I really enjoyed the inclusion of Metal Music and how it weaves through the story. All the characters are fully fleshed out and I loved the inclusion of well known areas/ gig venues in London. A fantastic read and I can’t wait to see what the author does next!
